The California Academy of Sciences is currently seeking an Infographics Designer to join the Creative Studio.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Infographics Designer works in the Creative Studio to create engaging visuals that transform scientific data and research into design for exhibits, print and screen. This is an opportunity for a talented and conceptual designer to join an in-house design department of a forward-looking San Francisco institution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Conceive and develop information graphics (e.g., charts, diagrams, maps, icons) for print, exhibit or screen
•Create illustrations (eg, earth processes, evolution diagrams, biological illustrations)
•Design screen interactives incorporating infographics for the public floor
•Integrate information graphics into the design of Academy exhibits and collateral, (ie brochures and maps)
•Design educational and programmatic materials for the public floor
•Execute accurate production-ready final mechanical/specifications in a timely manner
•Follow Academy identity and design guidelines for all work
•Work directly with individuals in the Exhibit, Research and Education departments to obtain content for graphics
•Follow all Academy safety regulations
•Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:
•Bachelor’s degree in design or related field
•3-5 years experience in a professional design situation, including design with science-related topics

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
•Experience in creating infographics (maps, charts, diagrams) and visualizing data
•Ability to create vector illustrations, scientific illustrations and icons
•Ability to interpret complex information to produce engaging visualizations
•Familiarity with scientific data sources and biological sciences content
•Ability to illustrate in various styles
•Experience in designing engaging user experiences (interface design and interactive design)
•Ability to define functionality, and produce flowcharts, wireframes and templates
•Have excellent facility with typographic communication
•Able to manipulate and retouch photographs
•Understanding of spec’ing and preparing work for a variety of production outputs
•Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, specifically: InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, and reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Must be able to perform repetitive motions 75% of the time. Must be able to lift 30 lbs.

We are in charge of design research projects about knowledge visualization and used to work in a scientific context, for scientific reasons. We also work for privat and institutional clients, and we are teaching info-design at the University of art and design in Geneva (Switzerland).
