POSITION SUMMARY:

Uses advanced professional concepts and knowledge of UC objectives to analyze and present complex issues in creative and effective ways both online and in print. Incumbent works to "tell stories with data" visually and in prose; these stories are both assigned projects and those proposed by the incumbent using knowledge of UC and external data to further UC objectives. These stories span the entire UC enterprise, including but not limited to: students, faculty, staff, research, health sciences, and budget.

Serves as department and OP expert on data visualizations. Employs a variety of data visualization tools such as Tableau, ArcGIS, D3, various Java tools among others. Works with less experienced staff within IRAP, OP and the campuses to broaden capacities in data visualization both online and in print.

Works on complex policy and planning issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors some of which may be confusing. Uses a wide range of data analysis methods to determine the underlying truth of an issue and explain that to non-technical audiences at the highest levels of the University and external stakeholders including the general public.

Applies in-depth understanding of internal and external policies and procedures to maintain student and employee privacy and proper ethical and administrative practices.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in social science, humanities or related area and least 5 years of related experience/training.

Requires thorough knowledge in data collection and analysis techniques especially sophisticated data visualization techniques; statistics or social science research and analysis techniques; knowledge of organization-specific computer application programs (for example, query tools for data warehouses and GIS mapping software); knowledge of principles and procedures involved in handling sensitive student and employee data (for example, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA and the California Information Practices Act, or IPA).

Able to provide good judgment, decision-making and problem-solving while managing several complex projects with both short and long deadlines.

Requires active listening, critical thinking and good interpersonal skills while working with both internal and external colleagues and clients.

Requires ability to present complex findings and recommendations in a clear concise manner visually, on the web, in writing and verbally to a non-technical audience in both short-form and long-form formats.

Requires thorough knowledge of GIS technology including the ability to geocode and produce a wide variety of maps in differing formats both printed and online for a number of audiences.

Advanced degree in social science, humanities or related area preferred.

Thorough knowledge of data visualization tools such as: JavaScript, Object-Oriented Programming, HTML5, CSS 3, D3, Backbone.js and ArcGIS is preferred.

Experience working within the UC system and understanding of UC organizational rules and regulations preferred.
