Help Wanted: Data Visualization Design Jobs > Graphics Editor -Congressional Budget Office (full-time)

The Congressional Budget Office is a small nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. The Editorial and Publishing Services unit, which is part of the Management, Business, and Information Services Division, seeks a Graphics Editor to help make CBO’s publications clear and accessible to a broad audience.

The Graphics Editor will join a 10-person publications team (including 2 other Graphics Editors) and will work with staff members throughout the agency on reports, graphics, slide decks, and infographics. Responsibilities include conceptualizing and precisely executing statistical graphics and data visualizations (including tables and charts) that are informative and aesthetically pleasing; helping in their early development by working with analysts and reviewing drafts of publications; and crafting cohesive graphical stories. Responsibilities also include producing finished publications with InDesign, Illustrator, Excel, and other tools. And because the ways that people obtain information are continually changing, the Graphics Editor will help create approaches to publishing that focus on the web.

Qualifications
Candidates must have at least three years of experience in data visualization and graphic design, as well as a bachelor’s or advanced degree. Experience with producing high-quality data visualizations for print or online publication is required.

Experience with the production of print publications is highly desirable, as is experience with online publishing. Other desirable skills include proficiency with Microsoft products, especially Word and Excel; with Adobe products, especially InDesign and Illustrator; and with programming languages that can be used for making static and interactive graphics, such as R (ggplot2), Python (Matplotlib, Seaborn), and JavaScript (D3, Highcharts).

Success in the position will require possessing superior attention to detail; producing highly accurate work even when juggling several priorities; and collaborating well in a process for composition, review, and production that typically involves many people. Occasional evening and weekend work, usually with some notice, is necessary.

Salary and Benefits
The salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience, education, and other qualifications. CBO offers excellent benefits and a collegial, respectful work environment.

How to Apply
Please submit a cover letter, a résumé, salary history, a portfolio of samples, and contact information for three references at www.cbo.gov/careers. The portfolio may be submitted as an attachment, a link to a website, or both. It should include statistical and conceptual graphics dealing with challenging subjects; it may also demonstrate ability with print layout or online publication. Apply by December 2, 2018, to ensure consideration. Candidates should be prepared to supply additional work samples and references on request. Only complete applications will be considered.
