Visualizing Carbon Dioxide Emissions

This is a great way to visualize gas emissions which are normally invisible. That's why most people don't have any real sense how much is produced by the things you do in everyday life like running your washing machine or refrigerator.

The black balloons really work, with the black color implying "bad" and they're actually filled with a lighter than air gas that rises into the atmosphere. I'm assuming that the size of the balloons actually represents the 50 grams of greenhouse gas discussed in the ad.

Found on infosthetics.com and radar.oreilly.com and the original is at www.saveenergy.vic.gov.au from the Australian government.

Meet The World, Infographic Flags

Meet The World is an infographic project that uses the colors of eight national flags to represent some of the current issues in the world.

Icaro Doria is Brazilian, 25 and has been working for the magazine Grande Reportagem, in Lisbon, Portugal, for the last 3 years. He is part of the team (with Luis Silva Dias, João Roque, Andrea Vallenti and João Roque) that produced the flags campaign which has been circulating the Earth in chain letters via e-mail.
I found the link to this on rc3.org.

GE Ecomagination Blueprint Ads

GE is running The Blueprint Series of five print ads combining photos with an overlay of infographics. This works really nicely because they kept the infographics relatively simple.

The Software Wars

Found originally on Digg Images, this one is hosted on Steven Hilton's website (the author).

I guess you could call this a Mind Map style, but it's more like a Battlefield style infographic. I really like how it shows the products that multiple competitors are challenging Microsoft with and the associated product on the Microsoft side that is being challenged.

2008 Presidential Campaign Finances

This interactive infographic from the New York Times website is really impressive. Using weekly data reported by the Federal Election Commission, it plots the contributions on a map of the U.S. and sizes the bubbles based on contributions from that city. It has data from every week since January 1st, so it will also "play" and animated version showing the contribution as time progresses (similar to the Trendalyzer that Google purchased from GapMinder).

You can also search for specific contributors to see which candidate campaigns they have contributed to, and how much they gave.

Top Presidential Contributions 1Q

It's early for the 2008 election, but major campaign funding has already started. It will be interesting to see if more money early in the race makes a difference in the outcome.
