I have never heard of Michael Moina but the tradition that people wear poppies in honour of those who died on the battlefield is coming from the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McRae who wrote during WW I:

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row"

He wrote the final version on december 8th 1915.
