Animated Visualization of First Leaf Appearance

Animated Visualization of First Leaf Appearance

Spring is coming! Jeremy White at the NY Times has animated data from the USA National Phenology Network showing the average dates of "first leaf" across the U.S.

In some cases, an animated data visualziation is better at communicating the data to the audience than a static design. This animation clearly shows the progression of Spring across the country and you can understand the data within seconds.

The ICO Explosion of 2017

4 Years of ICO Activity infographic

ICO, or Initial Coin Offering, is a method of fundraising that doesn't sell equity of the company, but selling things called "tokens" or new forms of cryptocurrency. The method has been around for years, but the actual boom didn't start until mid 2017.The 4 Years of ICO Activity infographic from The Next Web shows a summary of the investments made. The video version below gives a more detailed timeline of when and where the companies obtained their investments.

Token sales and initial coin offerings (ICO) were certainly the hottest buzzwords of the year for thousands of recreational cryptocurrency enthusiasts and seasoned investors alike. But have you ever wondered precisely how much money was poured into this trend this year? There’s a visualization that can give you an idea.

Cryptocurrency startup Elementus has compiled a nifty animated visualization that shows every token sale that has successfully raised at least $100,000 since 2014. The graph also displays the entire cashflow that went into these ICOs, with detailed month-by-month information for the past four years.

As you will notice in the video below, following some minor activity for the first three years, all hell breaks lose around May 2017. You can see tens of ICOs kick off around the same time, securing millions in financial backing from cryptocurrency enthusiasts and investors.

To put all of this data together, Elementus went straight to the source and collected this information first-hand, gleaning the figures directly from the Ethereum and Bitcoin blockchains.

We searched for every token, crowdsale, and multisig wallet we could find,” wrote Elementus founder and UPenn adjunct lecturer Max Galka. “We then identified the corresponding owners and added up the total amount of contributed funds – taken either from the blockchain itself or as reported by the fundraiser.”

Abita Beer Release Calendar 2018

Abita Beer Release Calendar 2018

In case you're not familiar with Abita Beers, it's a fantastic brewery out of Louisiana. In addition to a core set of beers, they make a number of seasonal brews that are only available certain times of the year. This visual Beer Release Calendar is your visual guide to when you favorite brews are in season!

The new year is here and we're looking forward to another great year of brews! We've been hard at work behind the scenes planning for 2018 and wanted to share some of what we've been working on. Our 2018 Beer Release Calendar is everything we'll be releasing and boiled down to one single sheet. It's our brew bible! Of course, most of your favorites are back, but as you'll see we're bringing some beers you might recognize out of retirement and releasing a ton of new beers. In all, we'll brew and package 31 beers in 2018 and that's not counting the tons of beers we'll be experimenting with and releasing on our pilot system here at the brewery.

I really like this design. The colors come from the individual beer labels, and I appreciate the additional visualization of the available sizes. I appreciate the repeated guide to the monthly column at the bottom. The cursive font, rotated 90° is hard to read.

The gradient bars are a nice touch since those brews don't have a hard end date, they're only available until supply runs out. It looks like the designer accidentally left a few of those as gradient to white instead of gradient to the background tan color.

The Economics of a UK Christmas

The Economics of a UK Christmas infographic

Do you have a budget for your christmas this year? The Economics of a UK Christmas infographic from Bridging Loans covers the spending for Christmas in the UK, and it continues to rise! The UK spends the most money on gifts, and more specifically on technology!

Here is a cool infographic we have created that provides lots of statistics about Christmas in the UK. The infographic is broken down into sections including overall Christmas spending, what type of stuff we spend the money on and how the UK compares to the rest of Europe.

My biggest feedback on this design, is too many of the statistics are shown as just text alone. Big fonts are not data visualziations, and just showing many of those values doesn't provide context for the audience.

2017 Shipping Deadlines

2017 Shipping Deadlines infographic

Tis the season for shipping! The 2017 Shipping Deadlines infographic from Ship Station will help you get your last minute presents to their destination on time!

Holiday shopping season is approaching, so get your team ready — because shipping is coming. As an online merchant, you need to know the holiday shipping deadlines for carriers and services to get your packages delivered by Christmas weekend. Knowing these cut-off dates will help you set accurate shipping costs, offer available services, instill trust in your online customers, and help them shop on time!

My only hesitation with this design, is it's similarity to Gantt chart. The highlighted periods are all of the acceptable shipping dates, but visually it seems to imply the shipping duration of the different services.

A Brief History of Printing

A Brief History of Printing

The Brief History of Printing infographic by Diginate looks back on over 2000 years of the industry.

There aren't too many industries older than printing (!) - the origins go back to woodblock printing in 200AD!

To try and understand the route that the art of printing has taken through to today's digital formats we thought we'd create an infographic charting it's history, and make some predictions for it's future...

Nice, clean design.

The Colors of Mister Rogers' Cardigans

Every Color Of Cardigan Mister Rogers Wore infographic

Owen Phillips was recently transfixed watching a Mister Rogers' Neighborhood marathon, and after finding the data, visualized Every Color Of Cardigan Mister Rogers Wore From 1979–2001 for The Awl.

From Owen:

For the past few days I’ve been transfixed by the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” marathon that began on Monday afternoon over on Twitch. Like watching the “Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross, zoning out to “Mister Rogers” is an exercise in escapism. After Rogers helped reset my brain I began to wonder about all the handsome, colorful sweaters he famously wore. Did Rogers have a favorite?

Fortunately, Tim Lybarger, a 40 year-old high school counselor from just outside of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, wondered the same thing a few years ago. Back in 2011, on his blog devoted to all things Mister Rogers, neighborhoodarchive.com, Lybarger recorded the color of every sweater Rogers wore in each episode between 1979 and 2001. “When I realized such a resource didn’t exist,” Lybarger told me over email, “I just felt like somebody needed to do it…might as well be me.”

The chart above uses the data Lybarger meticulously collected to show how Rogers’ preferences for the color of his cardigan changed over time.

Every Color Of Cardigan Mister Rogers Wore Linear

When Owen organized them in a linear order, he found that color trends definitely appears. Later years had many more darker colors.

Evolution of the Game Console

Evolution of the Game Console infographic

The Evolution of the Game Console infographic from OnBuy.com remembers our childhood with a timeline of the last 18 major game consoles.

Bound to bring back fond childhood memories, (for most of us!) our infographic takes you through the fascinating evolution of the home games console. Dating back to 1972 when the Magnavox Odyssey was released, our infographic will guide you through the technological advancements of the last 45 years, right up to Microsoft’s 4K-ready Project Scorpio, set to launch in December 2017.

Intrigued? We bet! Now, kick back, relax and enjoy the wonderful world of gaming.

As much as I like the content and remembering playing on the consoles, this timeline is not well designed. It's not that hard to actually line up the consoles with the correct years instead of just showing them in pairs no matter what the dates are. Why even bother putting them into chronological order if you're not going to line them up correctly?

For businesses, a timeline history of their industry is a great topic idea for an infographic.

Bold & Justified: The Huge World of Typography

Bold & Justified: The Huge World of Typography infographic

Coulor Lovers has done some etensive research on typography and has compiled it into their Bold & Justified: The Huge World of Typography infographic. A lot has changed since 1452 when the first movable type was invented. Now every business and brand can have their own unique typeface.

Comic Sans is installed more on PCs. Why so serious Linux & Mac? That's just one of the many things we discovered while looking into the creative history of typography aka fonts. They play a huge part in branding and logos. They bring us the words in the stories we read. They add personality to a message. ... and with CreativeMarket.com, our new marketplace for beautiful design content like fonts launching soon, we wanted to bring the typographic history, usage & character to life. Get your typographic love on!

The content in this one is fantastic, but they took some creative liberties when it comes to visualizing the data. A common error is sizing circle incorrectly by changing the diameter to match the data instead of the area (See more HERE). The lengths of the ties in the Style section is just creative illustration, and doesn't match the data values. The doughnut chart on the "Type On The Web" section doesn't add up to 100%!

I love the depth of details they put together, but the data visualization details are disappointing.
