You may want to check the wikipedia article on split infinitives, which even mentions "to boldly go".
Well "to boldly go" WAS grammatically incorrect, but language responds to usage. The usage of this construction post Star Trek has gone way up, so now it is ok for purposes of emphasis!
Who knew that kidney stones were a commodity???
"to boldly go" was never incorrect. It's not a split infinitive, because the infinitive is "go". The "to" is just an article used for syntax. Compare "I build houses". Build is infinitive there. Infinitive is just the "unmarked" form of a verb.
The "rule" about infinitives derives from latinophile gibberish.
Thanks for all of the information, great blog by the way.
