iPhone 3GS vs. iPhone 4 infographic

From the iPhone team at Mahalo, the iPhone 4 vs. iPhone 3G infographic does a good job covering the bases on what’s new about the new iPhone.  But Jason Calacanis asked at the end of the post “any ideas of how to improve?”  So I offer my infographic suggestions:

1. Visualize the data accurately.  It the battery section the bars shown are 8 bars for 5 hours and 12 bars for 7 hours.  Based on that scale, the 7 hours should only be 11.2 bars. Matching the numbers exactly with 5 and 7 bards would be easier for the readers to comprehend. The small bar chart in between is redundant.
2. Do something to visualize the increase in processor speed and RAM.  Don’t just list numbers.
3. Do something to visualize the megapixels of the camera, don’t just list the numbers.  A square showing the area covered by each resolution would be good.
4. Same with the screen resolution, do something to visualize how many more pixels or on the display
5. The 24% thinner looks like an after thought, make size and dimensions its own category
6. Don’t show 8GB, 16GB and 32GB memory cards all the same size.  Visualize the differences.

 What would you suggest as improvements?

Odd…I had published these same suggestions on Calacanis.com in the comments to the post of this infographic, and my comment was deleted.  Maybe Jason Calacanis didn’t really want to know how to improve it?  There aren’t any comment now, so maybe Jason should just turn off comments if he doesn’t want them.

UPDATE: I can see my comment, but others can’t.  It may be awaiting moderation.

I won't claim to understand or attempt to explain the math behind the investolution.com charts that predict the overall stock market for the next 40 days.

This page contains the prediction for S&P 500 Index minimum and maximum daily closing prices over the next 40 trading days.  

It is predicted that S&P 500 Index will not close under 1,178 and over 1,295 between the dates September 19, 2008 and November 14, 2008. This prediction method was accurate for 71.0% and 95.0% of the cases (for minimum and maximum predictions, respectively) within an error margin of +-5% in the past.

The Wine Advocate Vintage Guide

From eRobertParker.com, the online Wine Advocate Vintage Guide. Fascinating guide of wines from 1970-2005. Wines are grouped by region and year, and each group is scored and given a letter code to identify the current maturity status of those wines (like Ready to Drink, Too Old and Early Maturing). The color coding represents ranges of the numeric scores.

The guide is interactive, so clicking on any of the rating circles brings you to a list of the specific wines grouped together for that region. For the specific wines, you can see their individual name, score, maturity level and price range.

Periodic Table of Visualization

This table is a must-see site for anyone who works creating visualizations. This website from visual-literacy.org has grouped visual methods into six categories (like Concept Visualization and Metaphor Visualization), and made it interactive so when you move your mouse over one of the specific methods it shows you an example.

This is a great resource to help inspire you to visualize your data in new ways. I find that I like trying to visualize the same data in a couple different ways to find out which works best at communicating the data to others. Ironically it's missing the visual method of laying out data into a periodic table!
